Catch a $10,000 Golden Fish!

A $10,000 prize is up for grabs if you catch a golden-tagged Fish, as part of an initiative by the Victorian Government to encourage fisherman back into bushfire-affected areas.

The competition is now open as of Sunday 1st March 2020 and will run for 12 months, finishing on 28th February 2021.

Up to 1,000 Fish marked with these golden tags are to be released in rivers and lakes through East Gippsland and north-east Victoria.

The competition, run by the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) aims to bring people back to places such as Mallacoota, Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Marlo, Mitta Mitta, Omeo and Bright – which have all been severely affected by the bushfires.

These communities rely heavily on recreational fishing as part of their tourism – with fishing usually bringing $600 million into the area each year, and generating 3,800 jobs.

'We want to get people back to East Gippsland and the north east with family and friends, spending money and helping local communities get back on their feet,' says Jaala Pulford, Minister for fishing and Boating.

'The Golden Tag competition is a Way to encourage fishers to visit waterways – some for their first time, and others because they've loved the place for decades and have fond childhood memories.'

Prizes

The first 10 tagged Fish reported as caught will win a $10,000 cheque – with tagged Fish caught after the first 10 to then receive a $2,000 cash prize.

Which Fish to look out for

Tagged Species include King George whiting, black bream and dusty flathead in East Gippsland, and Murray Cod, rainbow trout and brown trout in the north.

So what do you need to do if you catch a Golden Fish?

Congratulations on your catch!

All you'll need to do is take a photo of the Fish with its tag still in place, then remove the tag and keep it in a safe place. Also remember to record the length of the Fish. (You can then release the Fish if you choose to. Note: Murray Cod 55-75cm and dusty flathead 30-55cm must be released).

Then get in touch with the VFA on (03) 9658 4737 to record your catch. You'll need to give your name, contact details, tag number, size and Species of the Fish and where it was caught.
