Winterization

Similar Terms: winterize,winterise

Just how it sounds - preparing your Boat or engine for winter, so it can continue to perform at optimum level.

The best time to start the winterizing process is at the end of the boating season after Easter, when winter's round the corner and Gear goes into storage. It's then important to keep maintaining now and then til Spring.

A few little service tricks now (aka winterizing) can prevent corrosion and preserve your boat:

  • 1. Isolate the Boat batteries and switches so they don't run down
  • 2. Run the engine with fresh water to flush out any salt build-up (at least 5-10 minutes)
  • 3. Replace fuel filters and water separators, then check for leaks
  • 4. Change the lower unit oil (in case any water got into it. You don't want the water to freeze)
  • 5. Add fuel stabilisers (then run motor for 10-15 minutes so it works through)
  • 6. Fog the engine with fogging oil
  • 7. Spray with corrosion protection
  • 8. Grease cables and moving parts to keep them lubricated

And of Course, when in doubt, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
