Windlass

Similar Terms: Anchor Winch

Rotating device, often a drum, used for Hauling Line or chain to raise and lower an anchor. Windlass is a retrieval device which retrieves the Anchor and Rode.

To determine the length of Anchor Rode, examine the depth of Anchor Locker to determine the fall available. The fall is the verticle distance between the top of the Anchor Locker and the top of the Anchor Rode when the entire Rode is completely stored inside. When at Anchor your Rode should be secured to a chain stopper.

Available in horizontal or vertical windlass each with their own unique features:

  • Horizontal - most of the unit is on Deck, easy installation, good for boats with small Anchor lockers, Anchor lode enters the Gypsy, makes a 90 degree turn and feeds into Anchor Locker, minimum fall of 304mm is recommended for enough gravity to pull the Rode down into the Locker.
  • Vertical - most of the unit is below Deck, suitable for large Anchor lockers, anbchor Rode makes 180 degree wrap around the Gypsy providing security, minimum fall of 406mm is recommended for enough gravity to pull the Rode down into the Locker.

Once you've chosen which type you need, you must determine how much pulling power it needs. This can be done with a simple formula: total weight of Ground Tackle (anchor and rode) x 4 = Pulling power required.
