Solas

Safety Of Life At Sea. This International Convention was adopted in 1974 and came into effect on 25 May 1980. It is amended often to maintain relevance and includes conventions relating to maritime safety and security and ship/port interface.

The conventions cover areas such as ship/ Boat construction, fire and safety equipment standards, high-speed craft and maritime security, nuclear ships, cargo and dangerous goods transport, communications and Navigation. Once ratified and formally accepted by individual governments, the regulations are enforced by the local government in accordance with their own local laws. There are however some grey areas of enforcement due to the international nature of admiralty law and the differences between Port states and flag states of the vessel any particular time.

The Australian Government has ratified and adopted the SOLAS Convention.
