Pahang Cane at the Melbourne Zoo

CH Smith Marine have supplied the Melbourne Zoo with Red >Pahang Cane to help create their new Lemur Island escape, which was officially opened on the 13th December 2013 by the Minister for Environment, Ryan Smith.

The exhibit utilises Red >Pahang Cane in reflecting the Lemur's native habitat on the fringes of the rainforest of Madagascar.

Following on from our original article 'Pahang Cane used for Lemur Island at Melbourne Zoo', this new multi-million dollar experience is now open to the public, and is specially designed to bring visitors and lemurs together in the same space.

The area allows you to discover what it’s like to be a lemur as you enter Lemur Island through a Cane rainforest tunnel, then >Head up along a boardwalk towards the tree house area (as can be seen in the images on the right).

Available in approximately 25kg bundles, >Pahang Cane is more versatile than >Bamboo as it has the ability to be bent and therefore used in many different ways.

Pahang Cane has been used in many elements of this project including the 10m long entry tunnel which was woven by volunteers using a Metal framework to support the Cane. It was also used to create the seven giant walk-through tree-house pods which were created by experienced artists, along with five smaller pods for the lemurs.

The large Cane structures have a big effect in making you feel like you're in the lemur's natural habitat, while also showcasing what a beautiful product Cane is. Be sure to visit the new exhibit and use these as inspiration to create your own art at home.

Melbourne Zoo’s new Lemur Island exhibit is open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm and entry is included in the zoo admission fee.
