Polymer

Similar Terms: polymeric

A polymer is a large molecule that is made up of thousands - even millions - of atoms bonded together in a chain-like structure. For example, think of DNA.

The molecular links in the polymer chain are called repeat units that are formed from one or more molecules called monomers. The structure of the repeat unit can vary widely and depends on the raw materials that make up the polymer.

Some common polymers include:

  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Polychloroethene, or Poly Vinyl Chloride - (PVC)
  • Polyethylene (PE) - used frequently in rope
  • Polypropylene (PP) - also used frequently in rope
  • Polytetraflurothene (PTFE) - commonly known as teflon
  • Polyurethane (PU)
