With the school holidays coming up, there's no better time to spend time with family in the great outdoors and get your kids interested in fishing!

 

Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre Program

 

If you head down to Queenscliff, the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre is hosting their next set of school holiday activities down by the foreshore.

 

The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre provides education to create awareness about responsible fishing, and the importance of marine and freshwater environments.

 

Running from July 3rd to 9th, the program has plenty of activities to keep the whole family happy – with fishing, snorkelling, storytime and rockpool rambles, just to name a few!

 

Here is a List of the activities on offer:

 

Outdoor activities

 

  • Hooked - Family Fishing Trip - $10 per person*
    Hop on a Boat on Port Phillip Bay and learn about responsible fishing behaviours while having fun. Suitable for ages 8 years & over.
    Must have Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence (unless you are exempt).

  • Marine Biology Cruise - $10 per person
    Discover amazing marine life by Boat on Port Phillip Bay. Suitable for 5 years & over.

 

  • Rockpool Ramble - $5 per person
    Which curious creatures make the rockpools their home?

  • Beach Discovery - $5 per person
    What has the Tide brought in for us today?

  • Mudflat Meander - $5 per person
    Potter around the mudflats of Swan Bay and find some of its hidden inhabitants.

 

  • Be Lured onto or into the Bays - $20 per person

    Shore Snorkel:
    Snorkel amongst shallow algae-covered reefs in Port Phillip Bay and see what amazing critters live there. Suitable for ages 8 and up.

    Canoeing:
    Canoe over the seagrass meadows in Swan Bay to explore this amazing Fish nursery. Suitable for ages 12 and up.


 

Inside the Centre


  • Fishy Tales - Story time
    A morning of beachy tales and craft presented by the Queenscliff Library. Free.

  • Ocean Art for children - $5 per person
    Unleash your child's creativity - paint with the help of renowned artist/ illustrator Jennifer Beck. Suitable for 5 - 12 years
    Materials provided, but if your child has a sketchbook, bring it along.

    Marine Debris Sculpture-making
    - Thurs 6th July
    What washes up along the beach can be perfect for building something wonderful! Come along and try your hand at sculpture-making.

    Water Colour Sketching - Sun 9th July
    Let your child take inspiration from the sea and experimenting with water colour. Materials provided.

  • Aquarium Feedings
    Free, and regularly during the day. No bookings required.

 

Activities book out early, and bookings are essential. Get in quick!


 

Fly Fishing Family Day – Northern Suburbs

 

The Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club is hosting their annual Family Fly Fishing Day on Saturday 5th August.

 

When: Saturday 5th August, 10am – 2pm

Where: Yarramat Park, Yan Yean Rd, Yarramat

 

Fly fishing is a great Way to spend time together out in the great outdoors. Come down and learn the art of the cast, the tying of a fly and the secrets of the water!
